Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Financials and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 3.58% to hit a new 52-week low, while the S&P 500 index fell 3.94%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 3.82%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which fell 1.02% or 0.27 points to trade at 26.29 at the close. United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) fell 2.30% or 2.14 points to end at 90.87 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) was down 2.95% or 1.36 points to 44.74 in late trade.
Biggest losers included JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM), which lost 5.27% or 3.35 points to trade at 60.25 in late trade. Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) declined 4.87% or 1.29 points to end at 25.18 and Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) shed 4.80% or 3.64 points to 72.12.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were AGL Resources (NYSE:GAS) which rose 28.40% to 61.45, Keurig Green Mountain Inc (NASDAQ:GMCR) which was up 2.31% to settle at 51.30 and Skyworks Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:SWKS) which gained 1.82% to close at 80.51.
The worst performers were Newfield Exploration Company (NYSE:NFX) which was down 10.35% to 27.63 in late trade, Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation (NYSE:COG) which lost 9.80% to settle at 22.00 and Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (NYSE:FCX) which was down 9.39% to 8.68 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Spherix Incorporated (NASDAQ:SPEX) which rose 84.12% to 0.450, Escalera Resources Co (NASDAQ:ESCR) which was up 28.76% to settle at 0.180 and Sevcon Inc (NASDAQ:SEV) which gained 22.85% to close at 9.73.
The worst performers were Vital Thera (NASDAQ:VTL) which was down 79.36% to 3.65 in late trade, Great Basin Scientific Inc (NASDAQ:GBSN) which lost 26.57% to settle at 1.05 and Pulmatrix Inc (NASDAQ:PULM) which was down 25.30% to 4.30 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2349 to 131; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2350 fell and 239 advanced, while 6 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 45.17% to 40.69 a new 3-year high.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 0.51% or 5.90 to $1153.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 5.53% or 2.23 to hit $38.22 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 6.30% or 2.87 to trade at $42.59 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 1.89% to 1.1599, while USD/JPY fell 2.87% to 118.55.
The US Dollar Index was down 1.52% at 93.40.
