Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Basic Materials, Financials and Healthcare sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.95% to hit a new 3-month low, while the S&P 500 index declined 2.09%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 2.40%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT), which fell 0.97% or 0.70 points to trade at 71.42 at the close. Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) fell 0.97% or 0.33 points to end at 33.59 and Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) was down 1.24% or 1.04 points to 82.82 in late trade.
Biggest losers included EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD), which lost 2.99% or 1.96 points to trade at 63.64 in late trade. Visa Inc (NYSE:V) declined 2.95% or 2.03 points to end at 66.72 and Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) shed 2.63% or 3.75 points to 138.73.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Amphenol Corporation (NYSE:APH) which rose 2.08% to 56.84, Pentair Ltd (NYSE:PNR) which was up 1.07% to settle at 64.43 and Southern Company (NYSE:SO) which gained 0.17% to close at 41.96.
The worst performers were Gannett Co Inc (NYSE:GCI) which was down 15.06% to 31.57 in late trade, Harman International Industries (NYSE:HAR) which lost 6.07% to settle at 118.46 and The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (NASDAQ:GT) which was down 5.59% to 29.64 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Local Corporation (NASDAQ:LOCM) which rose 165.17% to 0.118, Ameriana Bancorp (NASDAQ:ASBI) which was up 34.97% to settle at 21.17 and Optibase Ltd (NASDAQ:OBAS) which gained 15.49% to close at 8.200.
The worst performers were DS Healthcare Group Inc (NASDAQ:DSKX) which was down 25.40% to 2.320 in late trade, Blue Earth Inc (NASDAQ:BBLU) which lost 16.79% to settle at 1.140 and China Gerui Advanced Materials Group Ltd (NASDAQ:CHOP) which was down 16.67% to 1.300 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2877 to 208 and 2 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2467 fell and 332 advanced, while 4 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 34.74% to 18.89 a new 3-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was up 0.46% or 5.40 to $1178.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 2.34% or 1.40 to hit $58.23 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 1.98% or 1.25 to trade at $62.01 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.65% to 1.1237, while USD/JPY fell 1.06% to 122.53.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.55% at 95.08.
