Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Basic Materials, Technology and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.09%, while the S&P 500 index fell 1.23%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 1.50%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD), which rose 0.68% or 0.33 points to trade at 48.57 at the close. Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) added 0.12% or 0.11 points to end at 93.24 and General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) was up 0.08% or 0.02 points to 25.11 in late trade.
Biggest losers included United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX), which lost 3.66% or 3.35 points to trade at 88.20 in late trade. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) declined 1.98% or 3.63 points to end at 179.72 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) shed 1.70% or 0.50 points to 28.66.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Dollar Tree Inc (NASDAQ:DLTR) which rose 1.96% to 69.18, Adobe Systems Incorporated (NASDAQ:ADBE) which was up 1.61% to settle at 84.66 and Pentair Ltd (NYSE:PNR) which gained 1.61% to close at 51.27.
The worst performers were BorgWarner Inc (NYSE:BWA) which was down 7.60% to 39.37 in late trade, ConAgra Foods Inc (NYSE:CAG) which lost 7.08% to settle at 39.40 and Mosaic Company (NYSE:MOS) which was down 7.03% to 33.88 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Wave Systems Corp (NASDAQ:WAVX) which rose 34.42% to 0.214, Great Basin Scientific Inc (NASDAQ:GBSN) which was up 27.81% to settle at 0.09 and Cemtrex Inc (NASDAQ:CETX) which gained 24.07% to close at 4.3300.
The worst performers were Wafergen Bi (NASDAQ:WGBS) which was down 36.92% to 2.05 in late trade, FreeSeas Inc (NASDAQ:FREE) which lost 28.17% to settle at 0.194 and Horsehead Holding Corp (NASDAQ:ZINC) which was down 18.25% to 4.12 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2186 to 353 and 1 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1990 fell and 568 advanced, while 44 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 11.52% to 22.46.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 0.74% or 8.40 to $1124.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 1.58% or 0.74 to hit $46.22 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 0.13% or 0.07 to trade at $48.98 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.57% to 1.1126, while USD/JPY fell 0.34% to 120.14.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.48% at 96.50.
