Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Technology, Financials and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.85% to hit a new 1-month low, while the S&P 500 index lost 1.70%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 1.67%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD), which rose 0.25% or 0.20 points to trade at 78.77 at the close. Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) fell 0.65% or 0.22 points to end at 33.81 and Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT) was down 0.88% or 0.73 points to 82.15 in late trade.
Biggest losers included United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX), which lost 3.55% or 4.32 points to trade at 117.43 in late trade. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) declined 3.12% or 1.02 points to end at 31.70 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) shed 2.70% or 5.08 points to 182.85.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Urban Outfitters Inc (NASDAQ:URBN) which rose 11.52% to 44.06, NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) which was up 1.70% to settle at 23.00 and Apartment Investment & Management Co (NYSE:AIV) which gained 1.62% to close at 37.63.
The worst performers were Avon Products Inc (NYSE:AVP) which was down 6.28% to 8.44 in late trade, Nabors Industries Ltd (NYSE:NBR) which lost 6.22% to settle at 11.61 and Denbury Resources Inc (NYSE:DNR) which was down 5.28% to 7.54 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Casi Pharma (NASDAQ:CASI) which rose 28.00% to 1.60, Recro Pharm (NASDAQ:REPH) which was up 22.92% to settle at 5.47 and ACADIA Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ACAD) which gained 17.85% to close at 45.880.
The worst performers were NN Inc (NASDAQ:NNBR) which was down 26.41% to 19.73 in late trade, Great Basin Scientific Inc (NASDAQ:GBSN) which lost 21.28% to settle at 1.85 and DragonWave Inc (NASDAQ:DRWI) which was down 20.76% to 0.610 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2377 to 438; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2153 fell and 630 advanced, while 4 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 10.82% to 16.69.
In commodities trading, Gold for April delivery was down 0.43% or 5.00 to $1161.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude Oil for delivery in April fell 2.53% or 1.26 to hit $48.73 a barrel, while the April Brent Oil contract fell 3.28% or 1.92 to trade at $56.61 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 1.41% to 1.0699, while USD/JPY fell 0.06% to 121.09.
The US Dollar Index was up 1.01% at 98.61.
