Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Technology, Consumer Goods and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.25%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.22%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.46%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX), which rose 1.21% or 1.24 points to trade at 104.12 at the close. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) added 1.12% or 1.90 points to end at 171.57 and Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) was up 0.92% or 0.81 points to 89.05 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which lost 2.65% or 1.53 points to trade at 56.19 in late trade. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) declined 2.62% or 2.84 points to end at 105.52 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) shed 1.65% or 2.66 points to 158.98.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which rose 13.66% to 7.740, Diamond Offshore Drilling Inc (NYSE:DO) which was up 9.02% to settle at 17.41 and Apache Corporation (NYSE:APA) which gained 7.11% to close at 59.05.
The worst performers were Tractor Supply Company (NASDAQ:TSCO) which was down 16.94% to 69.38 in late trade, Whirlpool Corporation (NYSE:WHR) which lost 4.09% to settle at 174.80 and Cognizant Technology Solutions (NASDAQ:CTSH) which was down 3.80% to 56.16 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Euroseas Ltd (NASDAQ:ESEA) which rose 32.43% to 2.450, GTx Inc (NASDAQ:GTXI) which was up 24.19% to settle at 0.7700 and Star Bulk Carriers Corp (NASDAQ:SBLK) which gained 19.91% to close at 5.5400.
The worst performers were Gevo Inc (NASDAQ:GEVO) which was down 28.86% to 0.4980 in late trade, Tractor Supply Company (NASDAQ:TSCO) which lost 16.94% to settle at 69.38 and Energous Co (NASDAQ:WATT) which was down 12.50% to 15.26 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1709 to 1435 and 112 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1275 rose and 1228 declined, while 125 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 3.77% to 12.39.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 0.57% or 7.70 to $1341.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 4.11% or 1.87 to hit $47.37 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 3.65% or 1.75 to trade at $49.73 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.15% to 1.1256, while USD/JPY rose 0.71% to 102.47.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.12% at 95.06.
