Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Health Care, Technology and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.47%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.45%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.56%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Company (NYSE:BA), which rose 1.15% or 1.77 points to trade at 155.57 at the close. Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) added 0.43% or 0.46 points to end at 106.35 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) was up 0.34% or 0.55 points to 161.03 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO), which lost 2.15% or 0.65 points to trade at 29.54 in late trade. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) declined 1.37% or 0.60 points to end at 43.28 and UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) shed 1.35% or 1.54 points to 112.86.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Discovery Communications C Inc (NASDAQ:DISCK) which rose 4.70% to 32.54, Discovery Communications Inc (NASDAQ:DISCA) which was up 4.12% to settle at 33.99 and Denbury Resources Inc (NYSE:DNR) which gained 3.37% to close at 8.58.
The worst performers were Micron Technology Inc (NASDAQ:MU) which was down 5.03% to 29.67 in late trade, Seagate Technology (NASDAQ:STX) which lost 4.45% to settle at 58.82 and Applied Materials Inc (NASDAQ:AMAT) which was down 4.45% to 24.49 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Metabolix Inc (NASDAQ:MBLX) which rose 56.72% to 1.05, Orexigen Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:OREX) which was up 32.12% to settle at 7.650 and Ceres Inc (NASDAQ:CERE) which gained 30.43% to close at 0.450.
The worst performers were Corporte Re (NASDAQ:CRRS) which was down 35.13% to 0.10 in late trade, Electro Rent Corporation (NASDAQ:ELRC) which lost 19.98% to settle at 10.41 and Primoris Services Corporation (NASDAQ:PRIM) which was down 18.35% to 17.22 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1851 to 968; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1817 fell and 980 advanced, while 1 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 6.37% to 13.87.
In commodities trading, Gold for April delivery was down 0.40% or 4.80 to $1203.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude Oil for delivery in April rose 1.38% or 0.69 to hit $50.27 a barrel, while the April Brent Oil contract rose 2.42% or 1.44 to trade at $60.98 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.08% to 1.1175, while USD/JPY fell 0.34% to 119.74.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.07% at 95.45.
