Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Healthcare, Technology and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 2.42%, while the S&P 500 index gained 2.51%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 2.73%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were General Electric Company (NYSE:GE), which rose 4.00% or 0.96 points to trade at 24.96 at the close. Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT) added 3.90% or 2.49 points to end at 66.38 and Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) was up 3.70% or 1.16 points to 32.53 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX), which added 0.22% or 0.17 points to trade at 76.84 in late trade. Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) added 0.99% or 0.38 points to end at 38.90 and Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) gained 1.44% or 1.04 points to 73.50.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were TECO Energy Inc (NYSE:TE) which rose 24.99% to 26.34, Microchip Technology Incorporated (NASDAQ:MCHP) which was up 9.41% to settle at 44.86 and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:REGN) which gained 8.55% to close at 542.76.
The worst performers were Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:NFLX) which was down 3.94% to 94.90 in late trade, Baxalta Inc (NYSE:BXLT) which lost 2.38% to settle at 35.22 and Yahoo! Inc (NASDAQ:YHOO) which was down 2.15% to 30.90 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Dex Media Inc (NASDAQ:DXM) which rose 57.78% to 0.43, Escalera Resources Co (NASDAQ:ESCR) which was up 28.57% to settle at 0.360 and 6D Global Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:SIXD) which gained 27.03% to close at 3.29.
The worst performers were Professional Diversity Network Inc (NASDAQ:IPDN) which was down 22.68% to 0.75 in late trade, Royale Energy Inc (NASDAQ:ROYL) which lost 20.49% to settle at 0.74 and DragonWave Inc (NASDAQ:DRWI) which was down 16.30% to 0.171 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2094 to 466; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2001 rose and 583 declined, while 44 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 10.50% to 24.88.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 0.04% or 0.50 to $1120.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 0.46% or 0.21 to hit $45.84 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 3.76% or 1.79 to trade at $49.42 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.37% to 1.1211, while USD/JPY rose 0.45% to 119.81.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.33% at 95.83.
