Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Telecoms, Consumer Services and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.36%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.21%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.45%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD), which rose 1.41% or 1.57 points to trade at 113.16 at the close. JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) added 1.03% or 0.68 points to end at 66.70 and United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) was up 1.00% or 1.17 points to 118.51 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 1.62% or 0.54 points to trade at 32.73 in late trade. Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) declined 0.40% or 0.41 points to end at 102.17 and Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) shed 0.29% or 0.12 points to 40.87.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were CH Robinson Worldwide Inc (NASDAQ:CHRW) which rose 5.48% to 64.62, Frontier Communications Corporation (NASDAQ:FTR) which was up 4.26% to settle at 5.38 and Urban Outfitters Inc (NASDAQ:URBN) which gained 3.91% to close at 35.98.
The worst performers were Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which was down 3.49% to 13.56 in late trade, Diamond Offshore Drilling Inc (NYSE:DO) which lost 3.41% to settle at 30.28 and Newfield Exploration Company (NYSE:NFX) which was down 2.97% to 36.26 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Motricity (NASDAQ:VLTC) which rose 40.98% to 8.670, Biolife Sol (NASDAQ:BLFS) which was up 40.91% to settle at 2.79 and Ardelyx Inc (NASDAQ:ARDX) which gained 39.72% to close at 14.95.
The worst performers were China Finance Online Co Limited (NASDAQ:JRJC) which was down 21.51% to 4.670 in late trade, icad inc (NASDAQ:ICAD) which lost 15.35% to settle at 3.310 and Clean Diesel Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:CDTI) which was down 15.08% to 2.14 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1800 to 1330 and 2 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1963 rose and 827 declined, while 6 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 4.07% to 13.66.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was down 0.67% or 8.00 to $1186.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 2.70% or 1.66 to hit $59.60 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 2.60% or 1.71 to trade at $63.78 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 1.07% to 1.1272, while USD/JPY rose 0.10% to 124.25.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.67% at 95.35.
