Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Healthcare, Technology and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.07%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.14%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.50%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were United Technologies Corporation (N:UTX), which rose 3.88% or 3.57 points to trade at 95.62 at the close. The Travelers Companies Inc (N:TRV) added 2.47% or 2.63 points to end at 108.95 and Apple Inc (O:AAPL) was up 1.83% or 2.05 points to 113.78 in late trade.
Biggest losers included International Business Machines (N:IBM), which lost 5.75% or 8.58 points to trade at 140.64 in late trade. Merck & Company Inc (N:MRK) declined 1.97% or 1.01 points to end at 50.39 and Pfizer Inc (N:PFE) shed 1.45% or 0.50 points to 34.00.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Dover Corporation (N:DOV) which rose 6.62% to 61.53, Monster Beverage 1990 Corp (O:MNST) which was up 5.21% to settle at 139.61 and SanDisk Corporation (O:SNDK) which gained 4.43% to close at 75.19.
The worst performers were Harley-Davidson Inc (N:HOG) which was down 13.92% to 48.25 in late trade, Micron Technology Inc (O:MU) which lost 10.80% to settle at 17.09 and Western Digital Corporation (O:WDC) which was down 6.98% to 74.86 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Energy Recovery Inc (O:ERII) which rose 197.56% to 7.320, Fairway Group Holdings Corp (O:FWM) which was up 31.08% to settle at 1.94 and Flexsteel Industries Inc (O:FLXS) which gained 26.21% to close at 42.28.
The worst performers were Neos Therapeutics Inc (O:NEOS) which was down 32.92% to 12.47 in late trade, Spherix Incorporated (O:SPEX) which lost 28.29% to settle at 0.380 and Rambus Inc (O:RMBS) which was down 28.01% to 10.00 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1488 to 1056 and 1 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1319 fell and 1213 advanced, while 53 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 4.07% to 15.59.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was up 0.35% or 4.10 to $1176.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 0.26% or 0.12 to hit $46.16 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 0.21% or 0.10 to trade at $48.71 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.15% to 1.1343, while USD/JPY rose 0.31% to 119.86.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.11% at 94.90.
