Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Technology, Consumer Services and Healthcare sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.16%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.21%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.25%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD), which rose 0.89% or 0.63 points to trade at 71.64 at the close. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) added 0.79% or 1.62 points to end at 207.81 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) was up 0.79% or 0.37 points to 47.23 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 1.61% or 0.56 points to trade at 33.91 in late trade. Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) declined 0.55% or 0.19 points to end at 34.56 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) shed 0.45% or 0.22 points to 49.22.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Altera Corporation (NASDAQ:ALTR) which rose 5.79% to 51.68, American Airlines Group (NASDAQ:AAL) which was up 4.27% to settle at 44.18 and Delta Air Lines Inc (NYSE:DAL) which gained 3.33% to close at 44.35.
The worst performers were Genworth Financial Inc (NYSE:GNW) which was down 2.77% to 7.72 in late trade, Juniper Networks Inc (NYSE:JNPR) which lost 2.66% to settle at 27.06 and Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ:BRCM) which was down 2.44% to 55.47 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were ImmunoGen Inc (NASDAQ:IMGN) which rose 71.94% to 15.44, American Caresource Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:ANCI) which was up 67.74% to settle at 2.600 and Ignyta Inc (NASDAQ:RXDX) which gained 65.92% to close at 14.90.
The worst performers were Imris Inc (NASDAQ:IMRS) which was down 28.74% to 0.031 in late trade, Mirati Ther (NASDAQ:MRTX) which lost 26.70% to settle at 26.87 and Jiayuancom International Ltd (NASDAQ:DATE) which was down 16.38% to 7.76 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1654 to 1485 and 1 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1405 rose and 1404 declined, while 4 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.88% to 14.10.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was down 0.04% or 0.50 to $1189.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 0.07% or 0.04 to hit $60.26 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 0.95% or 0.62 to trade at $64.94 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.59% to 1.0924, while USD/JPY rose 0.53% to 124.82.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.61% at 97.53.
