Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Materials, Energy and Utilities sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.90%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Element Financial Corporation (TO:EFN), which rose 4.71% or 0.86 points to trade at 19.10 at the close. Great Canadian Gaming Corporation (TO:GC) added 3.14% or 0.74 points to end at 24.32 and Dream Unlimited Corp (TO:DRM) was up 1.93% or 0.18 points to 9.53 in late trade.
Biggest losers included IAMGold Corporation (TO:IMG), which lost 5.26% or 0.14 points to trade at 2.52 in late trade. Precision Drilling Corporation (TO:PD) declined 4.92% or 0.43 points to end at 8.31 and Pretium Resources Inc. (TO:PVG) shed 4.82% or 0.34 points to 6.72.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 933 to 482 and 198 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 3.59% to 13.26.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was down 1.46% or 17.60 to $1187.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 2.34% or 1.40 to hit $58.33 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 2.47% or 1.62 to trade at $63.90 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.94% to 0.8044, while CAD/EUR fell 0.05% to 0.7396.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.97% at 97.39.
