Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Materials, Energy and Utilities sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.33%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TO:FM), which rose 8.55% or 0.63 points to trade at 8.00 at the close. New Flyer Industries Inc (TO:NFI) added 3.72% or 1.10 points to end at 30.66 and Alaris Royalty Corp . (TO:AD) was up 3.21% or 0.850 points to 27.310 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Centerra Gold Inc (TO:CG), which lost 17.19% or 1.26 points to trade at 6.07 in late trade. OceanaGold Corporation (TO:OGC) declined 9.45% or 0.360 points to end at 3.450 and Canadian Energy Services & Technology Corp (TO:CEU) shed 9.50% or 0.33 points to 3.10.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 745 to 540 and 314 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 17.14% to 21.39.
In commodities trading, Gold for April delivery was down 1.94% or 24.40 to $1235.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April fell 3.25% or 1.25 to hit $37.25 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 2.05% or 0.83 to trade at $39.56 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.36% to 0.7539, while CAD/EUR rose 0.01% to 0.6789.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.38% at 96.59.
