Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Mining, Materials and Energy sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 1.38%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Alacer Gold Corp (TO:ASR), which rose 18.18% or 0.560 points to trade at 3.640 at the close. MAG Silver Corp . (TO:MAG) added 11.91% or 1.94 points to end at 18.23 and First Majestic Silver Corp. (TO:FR) was up 10.31% or 1.81 points to 19.36 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Gran Tierra Energy Inc . (TO:GTE), which lost 6.91% or 0.300 points to trade at 4.040 in late trade. Lucara Diamond Corp (TO:LUC) declined 2.30% or 0.080 points to end at 3.400 and Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited (TO:FFH) shed 2.13% or 14.82 points to 681.01.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 789 to 340 and 107 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 10.25% to 14.41.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was up 1.05% or 14.00 to $1353.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August fell 0.47% or 0.23 to hit $48.76 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 0.60% or 0.30 to trade at $50.05 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.49% to 0.7782, while CAD/EUR rose 0.29% to 0.6974.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.11% at 95.61.
