Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Friday, as gains in the Energy, Healthcare and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.54%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Autocanada Inc (TO:ACQ), which rose 20.03% or 6.95 points to trade at 41.64 at the close. Bonavista Energy Corporation (TO:BNP) added 13.40% or 1.00 points to end at 8.46 and Crew Energy Inc. (TO:CR) was up 11.05% or 0.57 points to 5.73 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Sierra Wireless Inc. (TO:SW), which lost 7.88% or 3.52 points to trade at 41.13 in late trade. Canexus Corporation (TO:CUS) declined 4.49% or 0.08 points to end at 1.70 and Industrial Alliance Insurance&Svcs (TO:IAG) shed 3.84% or 1.70 points to 42.60.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 863 to 575 and 178 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 5.57% to 14.08.
In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was up 0.46% or 5.40 to $1187.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 0.86% or 0.51 to hit $59.45 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 0.10% or 0.07 to trade at $65.47 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.29% to 0.8269, while CAD/EUR rose 0.81% to 0.7377.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.14% at 94.87.
