Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Materials, Telecoms and REITs sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.45% to hit a new 52-week high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Torex Gold Resources Inc (TO:TXG), which rose 21.43% or 4.720 points to trade at 26.750 at the close. Alamos Gold Inc (TO:AGI) added 14.39% or 1.43 points to end at 11.37 and IAMGold Corporation (TO:IMG) was up 11.47% or 0.640 points to 6.220 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Interfor Corp (TO:IFP), which lost 4.50% or 0.68 points to trade at 14.42 in late trade. Hudson's Bay Company (TO:HBC) declined 4.11% or 0.54 points to end at 12.59 and West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd . (TO:WFT) shed 3.86% or 1.85 points to 46.10.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 659 to 508 and 121 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 7.13% to 11.60.
In commodities trading, Gold for February delivery was up 1.33% or 15.55 to $1180.85 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 0.86% or 0.46 to hit $53.72 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 0.67% or 0.38 to trade at $56.84 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.48% to 0.7555, while CAD/EUR fell 0.59% to 0.7124.
The US Dollar Index was down 1.04% at 101.42.
