India shares higher at close of trade; Nifty 50 up 1.84%

Investing.com – India equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Auto, Banking and Green Energy sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in NSE, the Nifty 50 gained 1.84% to hit a new 3-month high, while the BSE Sensex 30 index added 1.91%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Nifty 50 were Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (NS:MAHM), which rose 7.46% or 92.50 points to trade at 1332.45 at the close. ICICI Bank Ltd . (NS:ICBK) added 5.20% or 11.90 points to end at 240.65 and Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (NS:BHEL) was up 4.99% or 6.35 points to 133.65 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd. (NS:ZEE), which lost 0.94% or 3.80 points to trade at 401.90 in late trade. Infosys Ltd (NS:INFY) declined 0.80% or 9.50 points to end at 1172.70 and HCL Technologies Ltd (NS:HCLT) shed 0.25% or 2.10 points to 837.55.

The top performers on the BSE Sensex 30 were Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (BO:MAHM) which rose 7.40% to 1332.60, ICICI Bank Ltd. (BO:ICBK) which was up 5.40% to settle at 241.00 and Bajaj Auto Limited (BO:BAJA) which gained 4.95% to close at 2580.80.

The worst performers were Infosys Ltd (BO:INFY) which was down 0.87% to 1172.05 in late trade, Gail (India) Ltd. (BO:GAIL) which gained 0.29% to settle at 367.60 and Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (BO:TCS) which was up 0.42% to 2523.15 at the close.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 952 to 459 and 73 ended unchanged; on the Bombay Stock Exchange, 570 rose and 254 declined, while 28 ended unchanged on the India National Stock Exchange.

The India Vix, which measures the implied volatility of Nifty 50 options, was up 0.06% to 16.0350.

In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was down 1.23% or 15.50 to $1245.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 1.38% or 0.58 to hit $41.59 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 0.94% or 0.42 to trade at $44.27 a barrel.

USD/INR was up 0.51% to 66.660, while EUR/INR fell 0.23% to 75.3120.

The US Dollar Index was up 0.60% at 94.58.
