Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Utilities, Industrials and Consumer Staples sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.72%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Trican Well Service Ltd. (TO:TCW), which rose 9.89% or 0.46 points to trade at 5.05 at the close. Parex Resources Inc (TO:PXT) added 7.05% or 0.670 points to end at 10.170 and Ensign Energy Services Inc. (TO:ESI) was up 5.73% or 0.65 points to 11.99 in late trade.
Biggest losers included TMX Group Limited (TO:X), which lost 5.11% or 2.82 points to trade at 52.34 in late trade. SNC-Lavalin Group Inc. (TO:SNC) declined 3.29% or 1.47 points to end at 43.15 and BlackBerry Ltd (TO:BB) shed 3.24% or 0.41 points to 12.26.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 811 to 623 and 217 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 3.69% to 16.28 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was up 0.76% or 9.00 to $1192.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 2.24% or 1.33 to hit $60.58 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 2.39% or 1.57 to trade at $67.19 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.67% to 0.8322, while CAD/EUR rose 0.18% to 0.7423.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.46% at 94.67.
