Elon Musk Says Code That Helps Recommends Tweets Will Be Made Public Soon: 'People Will Discover Many Silly Things'

Benzinga - On Friday, Twitter CEO Elon Musk announced that the social media platform would make public the algorithm for recommending tweets.

The outspoken, billionaire entrepreneur said the code used for recommending the posts would become open source by March 31.

Musk added that the recommendation algorithm used at Twitter is overly complicated and that people may discover "many silly things" once the source code is available. Still, he suggested that making the code open source would help improve the quality of the recommendations it makes.

Open source refers to source code that can be viewed, modified and redistributed publicly. Publicizing code can run the risk of users taking undue advantage of it.

Musk also announced that Twitter would use artificial intelligence to "detect and highlight manipulation of public opinion" on its platform in the coming months.

"In the months ahead, we will use AI to detect & highlight manipulation of public opinion on this platform. So let's see what the psy ops cat drags in …," he tweeted.

The Twitter CEO had previously announced that Twitter's algorithm would be made open source in February.
