U.S. shares lower at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.06%

Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Technology, Consumer Services and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.06%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.21%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.05%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which rose 3.93% or 2.24 points to trade at 59.19 at the close. Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) added 2.77% or 2.58 points to end at 95.83 and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) was up 1.91% or 3.01 points to 160.90 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V), which lost 3.53% or 7.40 points to trade at 201.95 in late trade. McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) declined 1.65% or 3.49 points to end at 208.60 and Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO) shed 1.65% or 0.83 points to 49.33.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Macerich Company (NYSE:MAC) which rose 11.63% to 14.30, HollyFrontier Corporation (NYSE:HFC) which was up 9.76% to settle at 28.91 and Helmerich and Payne Inc (NYSE:HP) which gained 8.78% to close at 27.25.

The worst performers were Rollins Inc (NYSE:ROL) which was down 6.02% to 37.46 in late trade, MSCI Inc (NYSE:MSCI) which lost 5.82% to settle at 412.90 and Viatris Inc (NASDAQ:VTRS) which was down 5.27% to 17.43 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Lexicon Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:LXRX) which rose 103.32% to 7.97, Datasea Inc (NASDAQ:DTSS) which was up 59.66% to settle at 3.800 and Cps Technologies (NASDAQ:CPSH) which gained 43.97% to close at 10.7400.

The worst performers were Viveve Medical Inc (NASDAQ:VIVE) which was down 20.50% to 3.1800 in late trade, Qilian International Holding Group Ltd (NASDAQ:QLI) which lost 16.89% to settle at 9.99 and Eos Energy Enterprises Inc (NASDAQ:EOSE) which was down 13.02% to 24.71 at the close.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2203 to 914 and 53 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2259 rose and 810 declined, while 51 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 2.79% to 22.83.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.54% or 10.00 to $1844.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 1.42% or 0.75 to hit $53.66 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 0.59% or 0.33 to trade at $56.39 a barrel.

EUR/USD was up 0.01% to 1.2158, while USD/JPY fell 0.08% to 103.77.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.14% at 90.205.
