Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Utilities, Basic Materials and Industrials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.67%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.57%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.49%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO), which rose 1.74% or 0.48 points to trade at 28.01 at the close. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) added 1.25% or 0.57 points to end at 46.11 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) was up 0.86% or 1.38 points to 161.73 in late trade.
Biggest losers included 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which lost 3.80% or 5.91 points to trade at 149.50 in late trade. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) declined 3.61% or 2.88 points to end at 76.88 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) shed 2.51% or 1.98 points to 77.01.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ:SNDK) which rose 17.57% to 63.70, F5 Networks Inc (NASDAQ:FFIV) which was up 7.75% to settle at 127.68 and Under Armour Inc (NYSE:UA) which gained 7.34% to close at 95.93.
The worst performers were United Rentals Inc (NYSE:URI) which was down 13.72% to 66.98 in late trade, Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (NYSE:FCX) which lost 9.43% to settle at 13.64 and Alliance Data Systems Corporation (NYSE:ADS) which was down 5.75% to 284.34 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Inotek Pharmaceuticals Corp (NASDAQ:ITEK) which rose 193.88% to 15.37, UBIC Inc (NASDAQ:UBIC) which was up 42.50% to settle at 19.85 and Ultra Clean Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:UCTT) which gained 31.92% to close at 7.15.
The worst performers were NVE Corporation (NASDAQ:NVEC) which was down 24.14% to 59.51 in late trade, MoSys Inc (NASDAQ:MOSY) which lost 20.32% to settle at 1.490 and Wave Systems Corp (NASDAQ:WAVX) which was down 20.17% to 0.205 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2232 to 858 and 1 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1864 fell and 914 advanced, while 7 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 4.29% to 12.64.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was up 0.02% or 0.20 to $1088.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 0.01% or 0.01 to hit $48.78 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 0.02% or 0.01 to trade at $55.45 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.56% to 1.0990, while USD/JPY fell 0.10% to 123.86.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.35% at 97.28.
